A woman was kidnapped by IS in August 2014. She was sexually assaulted, tortured and beaten. Other women were also abducted and the Yezidis, a minority in Iraq, were slaughtered. She managed to escape and reported to the international community the IS's inhumanity. And she became a goodwill ambassador for the dignity of human trafficking survivors in September 2016. She won the Nobel Peace Prize on October 5, 2018. Yes, It is the story of Nadia Murad who recently won the Nobel Prize.
She is a human rights activist working for people who are sacrificed by war and violence. Today, We enjoy guaranteed human rights over the past. Of course, there are still some people in some countries who are being treated as subhuman. And the current concept of human rights was enacted by the blood of millions of people in the past. 'We forget that time because we have enjoyed a right in happiness for a long time, Someone died for us', Former President Roosevelt said.
There has been a long history of protecting freedom and human rights against many discrimination including identity, gender, wealth, racism and so on. we are still striving for it. Then, is there some efforts to protect human rights in religion? The subject of religion is difficult. It is not easy to talk because each doctrine and faith are different. However, it is definite wrong to socially disadvantage, act as subhuman, kill many people and start a war because of religion.
In world history, there are many events suppressing human rights in religion. Curialism in Middle ages, The Reformation, and even religious conflicts to the present day.
The church in the Middle Ages weakened due to the failure of the Crusades, the incident in which the pope was taken to Avignon, and the spread of infectious diseases. the church has become secular and corrupt in its compromise with power. In order to build St. Peter's Cathedral to regain power, They sold indulgence at a high price in the name of forgiveness of sins. Then there were countless illegitimate children due to hedonism and the hunts for witches and paganism to turn social discontent to other sides. In detail, the woman who was nominated as a witch had to pay all the expenses to go to trial, the cost of burning firewood, the wages of an adviser, the wages of a judge, and the cost of apology to the Pope and forfeit all her property. If some people did not obey their laws, they were killed.
Although the situation seems to be improved due to The Reformation, there is a cruel incident in which human rights are severely ignored by Calvin. Calvin killed over 50 people in four years who did not fit his principles. He acted brutal torture, such as hanging, beheading, burning, stamping and tearing leather.
In ‘Religion’, there are many cases in modern times freedom is not protected and human rights are ignored. The sexual assault and harassment that Nadia Murad also suffer, Religious conflicts (80 percent of the world's wars are caused by religious trouble) due to each different doctrines, Suicide commando, seeking only money and hedonism in the name of doctrines.
In recent years, there have been such terribly coercive conversions in Korea. What is the coercive conversion? Some pastors in Korea acts to, because other believers are different from them, assault, starve and give up their studies and social life. They then extort a large amount of money from the victim's parents. However, they pretend not to know it. Only, The victim and victim’s family are destroyed. It is no different from the Calvin’s atrocities.
“Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.“ -ARTICLE 2 of UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
There are many religions and different doctrines in the world. John Stuart Mill said ‘freedom would be more guaranteed when religions reveals their doctrine and communicates with people. I hope religions, in first, should guarantee human rights and human rights should be not suppressed by religions. Human rights in religion should be guaranteed.
It is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but human rights are not guaranteed yet. Many people suffer from religious conflicts. Because of many different religions in Korea, there are 1,000 people suffering from it and two women dead.
