The 2nd Memorial Ceremony for Gu Ji-In, the Victim of Coercive Conversion #Remember9

Do you know what happened in Korea in January 2018? A pastor, who was supposed to do good and lead to heaven, committed human rights abuses and killed one person. In anger, 200,000 people protested in Gwanghwamun, South Korea, but the South Korean government has not taken action on the sidelines. As a result, the number of the same victims is increasing.

It was the case that Ms. Gu Ji-In was dead of coercive conversion by the Korean Heterodox Counsellor. In January of 2018, Ms. Gu died due to coercive conversion. She was imprisoned in a monastery in 2016 and forced to convert. But she escaped dramatically. Since then, she has tried to inform the reality of the illegal conversion. She even posted a petition to the Korean presidential residence, hoping that there would not be a victim like her.

But the government didn't recognize it, and the conversion was not an issue. Coercive conversions continue. Due to public apathy, Ms. Gu was once again imprisoned in a pension in December of 2017. And she died of suffocation by her family’s violence on 9th of January of the following year.

On the surface, it looks like the family killed her, but it's actually that there were conversion pastors behind it. They do not act in person and move through their families to avoid the law in case they are prosecuted for coercive conversion. They come between victims and victims’ family so they take money from hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of Korean won. Solely, All damage goes to the left family.

The conversion pastors act the coercive conversion for not taking religious beliefs but only trying to make money. They define a person as cult, make his family feel uneasy, and then approach the family for a heterodox counselling with a large sum of money. And, they commit acts human rights abuses, such as imprisonment, kidnapping and assault. This is strictly illegal action.

Outraged by the human rights abuses and coercive conversion of the Republic of Korea, the whole world pointed to the coercive conversion of Korea. In particular, the U.N. Human Rights Council and ministerial meetings in the U.S. said the coercive conversion should be banned. Despite the worldwide movement, the Korean government is not aware of it. As a result, the conversion pastors have become more violent to act coercive conversion, and the victim is suffering from a lack of appeal. Does this make any sense?

Some citizens hold memorial ceremonies every year to remember the sacrifice of Ms. Gu Ji-In. In 2020, people have the memorial ceremony for her at the 18th of Jan. Please remember this and help the world know the reality of coercive conversion of South Korea.
