Press Conference of Shincheonji Church of Jesus Regarding a Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

 

 

  A novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading rapidly around the world. The new Coronavirus (COVID-19) has already spread a lot in China, the center of the virus, South Korea, Japan and Italy. Also, it is going to Europe and the United States. With no sign of the Coronavirus disappearing yet, it seems that governments’ move and citizens’ self-compliance are very important.

 

  In South Korea, the number of the patients stopped at around 30 until mid-February, but it has rapidly increased since “Patient 31” occurred. 4,212 people got the Coronavirus as of March 2nd, centering around “Patient 31” who worshiped at Shincheonji’s Daegu Church.

  

  By the look of it, many people believe that Shincheonji Church caused the rapid spread of the Coronavirus. Of course, Shincheonji’s worship can trigger the spread because lots of people are in the same chapel. And since the majority of the patients were Shincheonji believers, citizens could naturally think so. But did Shincheonji Church of Jesus deliberately spread the virus? The believers of Shincheonji just followed the Korean government’s policy and were in their daily life. Unfortunately, before “Patient 31” were confirmed of the infection, she just worshiped at Shincheonji’s Daegu Church.

 

  Nevertheless, the leaders of Shincheonji Church feel grave responsibility for this, are cooperating with the government and are trying to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. Some, however, said Shincheonji was concealing its information, and furthermore, many fake news about Shincheonji were spread. So Shincheonji Church of Jesus held “Press Conference of Shincheonji Church of Jesus Regarding COVID-19” with Chairman Man Hee Lee, on March 2nd.

 

 

  First of all, Chairman Man Hee Lee of Shincheonji Church of Jesus said at the press conference, “As the representative of Shincheonji, I sincerely apologize to the people. It wasn’t intentional, but there were a lot of infectees. We (Shincheonji) did our best. But we couldn’t stop the virus all. I apologize to the people again.” and, “We will do our best in our power and provide human and material support to the government.” He also mentioned, "A leader of a church is like a parent and believers are like children." He showed a responsible attitude of admitting that an absolute majority of the patients were Shincheonji and being going to cooperate with the government. He also bowed down to the public twice and offered a sincere apology on behalf of Shincheonji Church of Jesus.

  

  In the following order, the head of departments of Internal Affairs, Administration, and Foreign Missions of General Assembly Headquarter of Shincheonji Church explained how Shincheonji cooperated with the government, what data Shincheonji provided, and controversial news about Shincheonji.

  

  In a nutshell, Shincheonji Church, in recognition of the seriousness of this situation, sent all its information to the government on the premise that the government would guarantee the believers’ personal information. It also released all of the real state owned by Shincheonji, conducted disinfection of it, and will continue to accept and cooperate on all requests of the government.

 

  Fake news such as “Shincheonji hide its information” were found to be false. The fake news were caused by wrong data comparison between “Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” and “Gyeonggi Province” and also caused by malicious speculative reports. This press conference showed that Shincheonji was trying to do everything to prevent the crisis of COVID-19.

 

 

  Still, some politicians, the press, and even slanderers are acting imprudently without proper fact-checking and manipulating the media to get the public's attention, not to resolve the Corona crisis. Wouldn't these actions rather be disturbing the settlement of COVID-19 and causing anxiety of the people and splitting South Korea?

 

  A good thing always comes after a bad thing. I hope people work together to end the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
