<Themes for the World Human Rights Day since 2010>

World Human Rights Day started with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. How did World Human Rights Day begin? And every year, UN works for human rights with the themes. How important is human rights? And what is the theme for this year?

In 1900s of Europe, the competition to take over colonies was beginning caused by imperialism. One group that first began into the colonial conquest centered on Britain and France, and another group that made a belated start with Germany and Austria. Eventually, the two groups faced conflict in the Balkan Peninsula and World War I took place in 1914. About 65 million people were mobilized in the war and 51.7% of them were killed. The injured and missing were massive. The Versailles Treaty seemed to come to the end.

However, World War II broke out in 1939. The damage was worse than World War I. More than 73 million people were killed and more than half of them were civilians. Moreover, more developed war weapons including atomic bombs and chemicals killed people terribly.

There have been many wars in history but these two wars have left far more than 100 million dead. The damage except for the dead was horrible too.

As a result, the United Nations was founded after World War II. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted at the 3rd United Nations General Assembly on 10th of December, 1948 with clarifying the purpose of the U.N. Charter that all human rights should be guaranteed in reflection on human rights violations during the World Wars. After the terrible war, people around the world realized that 'peaceful world would never be achieved if anyone was not respected as a human being'. This led to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

And since 10th of December, 1948 when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, it has been designated as World Human Rights Day on December 10 every year, making efforts to ensure human rights.

   How about this year?
This year's theme is the same as last year's. The reason is that the campaign lasted since last year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of World Human Rights Day. This year marks the 70th anniversary of World Human Rights Day. In celebration of its 70th anniversary, U.N. launched a campaign on its website to upload videos that people read the Declaration of Human Rights in their own language. And the campaign is on SNS by #StandUp4HumanRights, #RightsOutLoud.

In face of the special year of the 70th anniversary, there are lots of guaranteed human rights but Not-guaranteed are too. Just as there has been a terrible war by neglecting other race, increasing the number of cases of human rights violations in the world may cause another terrible thing to happen. Or something horrible may be happening somewhere now. It's just that we don't care

It seems that 2018 is not the year when human rights were not issued. Namia Murad and Dennis Mukege won the Nobel Peace Prize for working for women who were sexually abused. But people in danger of dying of terrible poverty in Yemen. Refugees rising from Central America to the United States. Religious war still taking place in the Middle East. ME TOO in developed countries. And coervice conversion by Christian ministers in Korea.

In particular, coercive conversion has become an issue at the end of this year. In the developed world, Korea, Christian pastors act saying that people have different religions. Two people died in the conversion, and more than 1,000 people suffer from mental and physical pain. More than 100 media, including the New York Times ad, are reporting.

World Human Rights Day in mark of the 70th anniversary! #StandUp4HumanRights should be achieved, literally. Human rights should be kept in all area now. If we make a small effort to correct a small incident, instead of ignoring it as an incident that has nothing to do with me, we will be able to live in a better world next year.

  1. It is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but human rights are not guaranteed yet. Many people suffer from religious conflicts. Because of many different religions in Korea, there are 1,000 people suffering from it and two women dead.

  2. what good is a declaration when we cannot actually protect people?
There must be consequences for those violating human rights!

  3. I agree with the above. The UDHR is of little, if any, benefit to the many people suffering throughout the world
