Q&A on Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Regards to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) as of March 14 -part 2

On out of contact

We explain some cases regarding that some local governments released Shincheonji congregants being out of contact.

1) The contact number on the church register is not a new version 2) Being on the phone 3) Overseas business trip 4) Miscommunication from the health center 5) Real residence being different from residence on the church register, and so on. These cases are classified as “out of contact” to be released.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus encourages its congregants to cooperate with the quarantine authorities 25 times, and checks congregants’ situation by 24hr emergency system.

But we definitely tell that there is a limit, too. Shincheonji Church of Jesus is a church being in religious life, not a group collecting personal information. Residence, phone number, and etc. are written in our church register at entering the church and the update period of the register is not fixed. If those who move or change their phone number do not say to the church, the information does not be revised on the church register in real time. It is naturally applied to every religious group and company.

Also, a church is a community where various people gather. Among congregants, there are those who do not attend the church for a long time, go business trips, change their phone number, do not receive the church’s call, and are in other situations.

But Shincheonji Church of Jesus promises to contain the spread of COVID-19 by all means to overcome these limitations for life and safety of congregants, local communities and the people.

On the expression, “Shincheonji residence of group”

Shincheonji Church of Jesus did not encourage its congregants to be in communal life and has not such reasons. Of course, there are some houses and dormitories for teachers in charge of churches, lecturers, and evangelists, but it is completely irrelevant to the fact that certain apartments and housing complexes are purchased for congregants to reside.

It is possible for any religion to have congregants living around the church, and it is personal freedom. The church is not involved in congregants’ personal life. If some describe it as "Shincheonji residence of group" as if it were run by the church, it could cause the people to misunderstand, so please use more accurate expression.

On Seoul City conducting tax audit of the real estate and revoking the corporation of Shincheonji Church of Jesus

On March 9, Seoul City told that it would proceed with revocation of permission of the corporation, “New Heaven New Earth, Mission of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony,” but the corporation, “New Heaven New Earth.” is not the unincorporated NGO, “Shincheonji Church of Jesus.” Thus, although Seoul City revokes the corporation, Shincheonji Church of Jesus does not be disbanded. The existence of Shincheonji Church of Jesus is guaranteed by the Constitution and the law, and Shincheonji Church of Jesus has the rights stated in the law.

“New Heaven New Earth, Mission of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony” is just a missionary corporation owned by Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Most of the churches in Korea are unincorporated non-profit organizations, and they have separate corporate bodies as necessary.

Also, Seoul City also notified Shincheonji on March 10 that it will launch a local tax audit into 20 real estates owned by Shincheonji Church of Jesus.

Leaving quarantine behind at a time when it is time to focus on quarantine administration, it is seen as an administrative measure that defines Shincheonji Church of Jesus as an illegal organization and abusing its right to investigate.

The basic law on local taxes also states that “no tax audits should be conducted for any other purpose” and there is a regulation that prior notice should be made 15 days in advance. Tax audits of facilities that have already been closed since February 18 will only hinder quarantine.

Although COVID-19 has led to a number of confirmed cases in Shincheonji, and we are doing our best with a deep sense of responsibility for causing much concern to the people, we are opposed to using COVID-19 as a tool for political strife, where the lives and safety of the people are at stake. We sincerely ask you to concentrate on the quarantine, not politics.
